American new wave was always a music of middle-class privilege, more the soundtrack to an '80s prom than to a riot. Hyperactive softies such as the Modern Lovers and the Violent Femmes helped awkward teenagers with good grades cope with their burgeoning bodies; doubtless among those off dancing by themselves were the Massachusetts threesome Papas Fritas.
